Most of the patients we treat for hair loss in Gurgaon at our clinic are those who have faced hair loss for some of the most common causes. The causes of hair loss include such things as:
1. Hormonal Imbalance and deficiencies
Hormonal factors are the most common cause of hair loss. Hereditary baldness, also known as male or female pattern baldness, is primarily hormonal; it is known as androgenic alopecia because of the increased activity of male hormones. AA typically occurs with age, with two-thirds of postmenopausal women and 85% of men over 50 years of age experiencing some hair loss.
Other factors that can cause increased androgen activity in the body include endocrine conditions such as hyper or hypothyroidism, PCOS, and others. Thyroid disorders, in particular, can result in brow loss.
2. Postpartum
During pregnancy, the body goes through major hormonal changes, which appear to be beneficial to your hair because it becomes lush and shiny. However, hormonal fluctuations cause hair loss after delivery and, in some cases, eyelash loss during pregnancy or postpartum. Most hairs enter a resting phase during pregnancy, so once the hormones return to normal after delivery, much of that hair is shed. This hair loss is usually temporary, and new hairs grow back quickly. Hair loss during pregnancy, on the other hand, is unusual and could indicate a nutritional deficiency.
3. Medications and Medical Conditions
Hair loss can be caused by both medical conditions and medications. Here's some more information on each.
The following medical conditions are likely to cause hair fall:
- Thyroid disease occurs when your thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones.
- Alopecia areata (hair loss) (an autoimmune disease that attacks hair follicles)
- Infections of the scalp such as ringworm
- Diabetes
- Lupus
- Anaemia
- Anorexia
- Bulimia
Furthermore, specific drugs can cause hair loss by causing nutritional deficiencies or hormonal imbalances. Chemotherapy medications are at the top of the list. Other drugs, such as antibiotics, blood pressure medications, and many others, can cause hair loss as a side effect.
4. Inflammation
Rarely do people realise that inflammation, particularly from skin issues such as seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis, can cause hair loss. Irritation can harm both the hair follicles and the hair root, causing it to shed. Hair loss usually stops once the inflammation is under control, but hair might not always grow back properly in some cases if the hair follicle becomes damaged or scarred.
5. Stress
Excessive or prolonged stress is frequently associated with unexpected hair loss (and not just because of the urge you might get to pull your hair out of frustration). Cortisol levels that remain elevated during chronic stress, for example, can cause problems; sustained high cortisol slows cell regeneration, including cell regeneration in your scalp. Long-term high cortisol levels slow your metabolism and weaken your immune system, both of which are detrimental to healthy hair growth. When the stressor is removed and the body stops overproducing cortisol, hair loss usually stops and hair growth returns to normal.
Tight Hairstyles and Grooming Traction alopecia is hair loss caused by external pressure on the scalp, most commonly from very tight hairstyles or extensions. Placing your hair up in a tight ponytail once in a while is unlikely to cause hair loss, but doing so on a regular basis or opting for very tight hairstyles can lead to serious hair damage over a period of time, more so if the follicle becomes scarred.
Tweezing, as well as waxing, can indeed end up causing traction alopecia. Additionally, people who suffer from stress-related conditions that cause hair-pulling, such as trichotillomania, are predisposed to traction alopecia.
6. Traction alopecia
It is the type of hair loss caused by external pressure on the scalp, most commonly from very tight hairstyles or extensions. Placing your hair up in a tight ponytail once in a while is unlikely to cause hair loss, but doing so on a regular basis or opting for very tight protective hairstyles can eventually lead to serious damage, especially if the follicle becomes scarred.
Tweezing, as well as waxing, can indeed end up causing traction alopecia. Additionally, people who suffer from stress-related conditions that cause hair-pulling, such as trichotillomania, are predisposed to traction alopecia.
7. Styling with Heat
If you're losing more hair than usual, examine your use of heat-styling equipment closely. Nothing beats a bouncy, big-hair blowout or sleek flat-ironed hair. However, there is a cost. Heat styling can weaken already weakened hair and cause breakage.
8. Dietary deficiency
A poor diet can also have a variety of consequences, including hair loss from the scalp, brows, or lashes. Nutritional imbalance can lead to baldness in a range of methods, including overall caloric deficiency and protein deficiency. Hair loss is also a symptom of anaemia, which can occur for a variety of reasons, including a lack of iron, vitamin B-12, or folate.
